Are cannabis beverages affecting alcohol sales?

New Trends in Cannabis-Infused Beverages Impacting the Spirits Industry

Jon Taffer, the host of “Bar Rescue,” recently shared insights on emerging trends that are influencing bars across the U.S. One noteworthy trend is the rise of cannabis-infused drinks, appealing to those opting for alcohol-free lifestyles. While the overall market impact is still unfolding, Taffer confidently states that this shift is certainly affecting the spirits sector.

On “Varney & Co.” he noted, “There’s clearly a trend in that direction…and there’s no doubt that cannabis is affecting the spirits industry.” As for CBD-infused beverages, they are steadily on the rise.

Data gathered by Statista underscores this growth: Cannabidiol products were projected to generate $5.3 billion in 2021, with estimates suggesting they’ll reach $16 billion by 2026. In a broader context, the U.S. cannabis market is expected to surpass $45 billion this year.

Nonetheless, Taffer pointed out significant challenges within the industry, particularly in states where the sale of alcohol and cannabis is prohibited in the same establishments.

Interestingly, Minnesota stands out as one of the few states that permits breweries to sell low-dose THC and hemp-infused beverages, sometimes even on tap. In contrast, California has imposed stricter regulations, as the state’s Alcohol Beverage Control Agency has advised that alcohol-licensed businesses cannot sell hemp products.

Despite these hurdles, several celebrities, including country icon Willie Nelson, have ventured into this evolving market.
