Crime Surge in Encino Amid Tragic Murders
In the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Encino, where “American Idol” executive Robin Kay and her husband were tragically killed in what seems to be a home invasion, residents are on edge. Last summer, the area was rattled by a wave of violent break-ins.
Encino, which is home to numerous celebrities like Nick Jonas and Dave Grohl, witnessed a staggering 40% increase in home robberies during late July and August of last year, with at least eight burglaries reported over a short period.
During these incidents, groups of masked intruders typically forced their way in by smashing windows and glass doors, often leaving families and children inside scared and feeling unsafe.
In light of these events, police have begun patrols with helicopters to enhance security in the area.
This heightened response follows the intrusion into Kay’s $4.5 million home, where an intruder allegedly smashed a window and entered before confronting her and her 70-year-old husband, Thomas Delca.
The couple was found in separate rooms with fatal gunshot wounds on Monday, several days after their neighbors grew worried when they had not seen them. The break-in and subsequent murders are believed to have occurred on Thursday.
Raymond Boudarian, a 22-year-old suspect, was arrested on Tuesday. Authorities stated that he had no prior connection to the victims and that this break-in seemed to be an isolated incident, not linked to the broader crime wave in the area.
In the weeks leading up to their deaths, Kay and Delca had reached out to a private security firm, expressing concerns about suspicious activity in their neighborhood. Chris Herzog, the owner of the security group, recalled that he and the couple were getting to know each other but that they ultimately decided against hiring his services.
Interestingly, a neighbor mentioned hearing nothing unusual, only that one tenant reported seeing someone jumping the couple’s fence and subsequently called the police. However, when officers arrived, they found no evidence of a break-in.
Kaye had a long career as a music supervisor, notably working on “American Idol” for 15 years and earning various awards for her efforts. Her husband was a musician. Law enforcement mentioned that the home invasions from the previous summer mirrored tactics often associated with local Latin gangs.
