Argentine President’s Announcement on Embassy Relocation
On Wednesday, Argentine President Javier Miley addressed the Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, where he revealed plans to relocate Argentina’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by 2026. This decision aligns with a similar move by the United States.
Miley’s speech highlighted his support for Israel amidst its ongoing conflict with Hamas, condemning the “wild barrage” of terrorist attacks witnessed on October 7th. His remarks were made during a special session of the parliament, held in his honor, which included prayers at the Western Wall and meetings with prominent Israeli leaders.
The libertarian leader, often compared to former US President Donald Trump, expressed concerns about the state of Western democracy, stating, “Whether we like it or not, the West is being tested.” He commented on various threats, emphasizing that they pose a challenge to democratic ideals.
Interestingly, Miley also referenced climate activist Greta Thunberg, following reports of her recent deportation from Israel. He pointed out that both Israelis and Argentinians seem to be seeking media attention while criticizing the conditions under which detainees are held.
Miley’s trip to Israel marks a significant moment in his presidency, as he has shown a deep interest in Jewish ethics and has expressed intentions to convert to Judaism in the future.
He highlighted the precedent set by the US, where Jerusalem was recognized as Israel’s capital under President Trump in 2017, leading to the embassy’s relocation in 2018.
