Argentinian Politician Has Heart Attack During Televised Debate, Former Health Minister Provides CPR

Political Candidate Passes Away During Debate

A 66-year-old Argentine political candidate, Hernán Damiani, tragically died on October 16 after suffering a heart attack while participating in a televised debate.

Damiani, who was representing the Union of Radical Citizens (UCR), collapsed during the debate. Dr. Walter Villalba, a former health minister, was present in the studio at the time and administered CPR along with first aid.

Sadly, Damiani later passed away at the Ramon Madarriaga Hospital, just a week before the general elections scheduled for October 26 in Argentina. He was aiming for public office in the Misiones province.

In a statement, the UCR party expressed their condolences: “With sadness, we bid farewell to Hernán Damiani, a great activist and leader of Misiones. He died while defending his ideas in a debate. A member of the state parliament and a national delegate, he made significant contributions in opposing Menemism during the 1990s. We stand in solidarity with his family and friends.”

Currently, Argentina faces potential political and economic challenges under the liberal presidency of Javier Millay. Despite signs of stabilization earlier this year, including a decrease in inflation and an increase in GDP, the situation appears unstable now.

In early September, Millay’s political party faced a significant setback in elections, with critical midterm parliamentary elections approaching on October 26 that could either bolster or hinder his efforts to reverse decades of socialist policies.

On a related note, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the Trump administration has engaged in a $20 billion currency swap agreement with Argentina’s central bank. This decision, which has been under discussion for some time, is intended to provide support for the struggling economy—potentially a crucial political boost for Millay in the upcoming elections.

Interestingly, just days after Trump endorsed this relief package, Millay made an appearance at a rock concert to promote his new book.
