Arizona prison still locked down after fight injures 9 inmates

Units at an Arizona prison remained on lockdown Sunday after nine inmates were injured in a fight.

The altercation involving numerous inmates broke out Saturday afternoon during outdoor recreation time at the Morley Unit at the Arizona State Prison complex in Lewis near Buckeye, authorities said.

The state Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry said prison staff were able to stop the fight and bring the situation under control.

According to prison officials, nine inmates suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but no prison staff were injured.

They said the Morley unit would remain on lockdown while the incident was investigated.

The medium-security Lewis Prison, about 69 miles west of Phoenix, houses more than 4,000 inmates and has faced significant staffing shortages in recent years.

It is one of 13 prison facilities operated by the state Department of Corrections.
