Arizona Wildcats Return to Final Four After 25 Years
The Arizona Wildcats marked a significant achievement on Saturday night by clinching a spot in the Final Four with a decisive victory over Purdue in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
It’s been quite a long time—25 years—since Arizona last reached the Final Four. Their previous appearance was back in 2001 when they faced off against the Duke Blue Devils in the national championship game, ultimately falling short. So, this win must feel pretty sweet.
In this latest matchup, freshman Core Peat was a standout, scoring 20 points in Arizona’s 79-64 triumph. His performance earned him the title of Most Valuable Player in the West Region.
“As a kid from Arizona, it’s such a blessing to be able to lead this team to the Final Four,” Peat shared. “I’m proud of them. We’ve worked for this. We’re not done yet.”
Arizona’s defense successfully contained Purdue’s top player, Braden Smith, who holds the NCAA assist record. Smith managed to score 13 points, dish out seven assists, grab five rebounds, but also had three turnovers, which isn’t ideal for a star player.
Alongside Peat, Oscar Clough contributed 14 points, while Trey Kaufman-Len was limited to just 10 points.
Remarkably, Peat’s achievement makes him the sixth freshman to score at least 20 points in both Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games.
Arizona’s head coach, Tommy Lloyd, had high praise for Peat, referring to him as “Mr. Arizona.” Lloyd highlighted Peat’s impressive background, noting his four state championships in high school and contributions to USA Basketball.
The Wildcats improved their season record to 36-2 with this victory, setting a new program benchmark for wins in a single season.
Lloyd, now in his fifth season at the helm, took over from Sean Miller prior to the 2021-22 season. He acknowledged the legacy of past coaches, particularly the legendary Lute Olson, expressing gratitude for their roles in shaping the program.
“If it wasn’t for Lute, if Sean didn’t do what he’s been doing for the 12 years he’s been here, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Lloyd said. “This is for them as well.”
Looking ahead, Arizona will face the winner of the Michigan vs. Tennessee matchup in the next round.
