Miraculous Recovery: Arizona Toddler Found Alive After Being Pronounced Dead

A toddler in Arizona, initially declared dead from a suspected drowning, was surprisingly discovered alive in a hospital morgue about six hours later.

The 18-month-old boy was discovered in a family’s swimming pool in Gilbert during the Super Bowl. He was quickly rushed to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead, despite police officers expressing concern that the child might still show signs of life. It’s a bit perplexing, to say the least.

Staff at the hospital dismissed those concerns, suggesting that any bodily movement was simply a response to resuscitation efforts. An officer attempted to convey his observations to the doctor who made the declaration, but was met with a firm rebuttal. The doctor insisted on his qualifications, stating, “I’m a doctor, I have a medical degree, and I went to medical school for a reason, so I could do what I love.”

Despite ongoing attempts by police to identify any signs of life over the following hour, doctors maintained their stance and declared the child dead.

Interestingly, an officer noted the release of air was both “audible and visible,” and mentioned that the child was gasping for air. Yet, that didn’t seem to shift the doctor’s decision at the time.

Hours later, after being moved to the morgue, the infant was subsequently found to be breathing again by the responding officers.

Reports indicated that approximately an hour later, the same signs of gasping were observed again. Heartbreakingly, audio recordings recorded officers instructing the family to say goodbye to the boy, illustrating just how dire the situation seemed.

However, the coroner later confirmed that the infant was, in reality, still alive. Following an MRI, it was revealed that the child suffered brain damage, which means he will require lifelong care.

In light of this incident, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center expressed its deep concern in a statement. They highlighted, “This is a heartbreaking situation. We immediately and thoroughly reviewed all aspects of the care provided to learn what happened and make meaningful changes to enhance our care.” While they emphasize their commitment to patient safety, they also acknowledged the need for privacy regarding the specifics of the case.
