Arkansas Teacher Indicted for Double Murder at State Park
The Arkansas State Police have charged a 28-year-old teacher, Andrew James McGan, in the murder of a couple who were hiking with their children at Devil’s Den State Park. After a thorough search, officers apprehended him at a barber shop in Springdale on Wednesday afternoon, where he was getting a haircut.
McGan faces two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Christan Amanda Brink, 41. Their bodies were discovered on a trail in the park, but their daughters, aged 7 and 9, are physically unharmed and are being cared for by family members.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders emphasized the seriousness of violent crimes, stating, “If you target innocent people, law enforcement will pursue you until justice is served.”
Interestingly, McGan had only recently left a teaching position in a small Oklahoma school district in May before moving to Arkansas. A spokesperson from Sand Springs Public Schools mentioned that he passed all required background checks prior to his departure.
Though he hadn’t begun a job in Arkansas yet, district chief Jared Cleveland confirmed that McGan had been interacting with students and their families during the investigation, providing limited details. He expressed concern for the Brink family’s well-being, particularly for the children.
In a concerning detail, the mother of a former student shared that her son had reported inappropriate behavior by McGan towards a young female student in 2023. The school district responded by placing him on administrative leave and conducted an investigation. Ultimately, while they found no evidence of misconduct, the school’s findings related to McGan’s classroom management fell short of expectations, prompting his resignation shortly thereafter.
On Sunday, July 26th, the Brink family was exploring the park when tragedy struck. It was around 2:40 PM on Sunday when authorities found their bodies along a secluded hiking trail. Although the children were unharmed, they are understandably dealing with emotional distress.
During the press briefing following McGan’s arrest, officials indicated the motive for the murders remains unclear as they await autopsy results. Law enforcement had earlier described a suspect, identifying McGan as having been dressed in a long-sleeved shirt, dark pants, and a baseball cap. Witnesses reported he fled the park in a black sedan.
State Police Chief Colonel Mike Hagar labeled McGan a “monster” and commended the collaboration among agencies that led to his capture, assuring the community that the children and other residents were safer now.
McGan is scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning. The Devil’s Den State Park, a popular destination located about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock, offers hikers various trails amidst the stunning Ozark landscape.
