Arkansas Man Arrested for Multiple Child Assaults
Authorities in Arkansas have arrested a man, Thomas Stokes, 49, who is alleged to have assaulted several children over a span of years. What’s troubling, police say, is his rationale: he reportedly argued that the Bible permits his actions.
Stokes was taken into custody on January 14, with charges including rape and drug-related offenses. As investigations progressed, police discovered his disturbing justification, according to Police Chief Kelly Baker.
Four victims have stepped forward, each sharing remarkably similar distressing accounts, Baker noted.
Initially, the investigation began on January 3, after the first victim expressed her “deadly fear” of Stokes, detailing multiple assaults and forced drug use. She claimed Stokes referenced a specific Bible chapter as a means to validate his behavior.
On January 5, a second victim corroborated that Stokes had sexually abused her repeatedly when she was around 12 or 13 years old.
Then, a third victim came forth, saying Stokes had unprotected sex with her when she was just 13.
The same day, a fourth victim revealed that Stokes gave her Xanax before assaulting her while she slept at the age of 13. Baker mentioned that additional witnesses have substantiated the victims’ accounts.
After Stokes’ arrest, a judge determined there was enough evidence to continue proceedings, setting his bail at an unsettling $1.5 million. Baker explained that Stokes’ arrest concluded a lengthy history of alleged abuse. Remarkably, two decades prior, he had approached one of the victims, urging them to call the police; however, fear prevented action at that time.
“Not a day went by that I didn’t think about that kid,” Baker expressed. “Everyone here feels like family, and my team strives to protect them.”
Currently, Stokes awaits trial in Clay County Jail and is barred from contacting the victims or witnesses. Should he be released, he’ll be required to wear a GPS ankle monitor.
