Two National Guardsmen Fatally Shot Near the White House
UPDATE – 12:48 p.m. PT – West Virginia’s Governor Patrick Morrisey has confirmed that the two National Guardsmen injured in a shooting near the White House have succumbed to their injuries.
“It is with deep regret that we confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, D.C., have passed away. These courageous individuals lost their lives while serving our country. We are in constant communication with federal officials as the investigation is underway. Our entire state mourns alongside their families, loved ones, and the Guard community. West Virginia will always remember their service and sacrifice, and we will seek full accountability for this terrible act,” he stated.
UPDATE: 12:38 PM — D.C. Police have announced one suspect is in custody following the shooting of the two National Guardsmen near the White House.
The police department has indicated that the scene is secure and is advising the public to steer clear of the area.
Numerous videos have captured a significant emergency response in the vicinity.
12:24 PM — Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem confirmed that two National Guard members were shot outside the White House.
On Wednesday, Noem took to social media, asking everyone to pray for the Guardsmen who were shot at 17th and I Street.
Reports have also surfaced indicating that a third individual was shot during the incident.
12:11 PM — In light of the shooting, the White House has implemented a security lockdown. The incident occurred near Farragut Square, roughly a five-minute walk from the executive mansion.
President Donald Trump is not currently in Washington, as he is at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
11:58 AM — Reports indicate that at least two members of the National Guard have been shot near the White House, but their conditions remain unclear.
