Arrested illegal aliens from sophisticated Chilean theft ring set free since charges against them aren’t bail eligible in NY

Undocumented immigrants arrested in a sophisticated theft ring in Chile were released last week after being found ineligible for bail in New York state. WABC TV reported.

According to the station, just after 3 a.m. on Nov. 7, six men broke into Frolic Florist on Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, Long Island, crashing through the roof and then smashing through a wall leading to Elegant Jewelers. Robbery squad detectives announced that they had also broken through.

“We need these laws changed. Give discretion back to judges. Let's do our job.”

The group left without taking any merchandise, but Nassau County police told WABC they used a radio jammer to mask the alarm system.

“How dangerous is that?” Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder asked, according to WABC. “If someone calls 911 or another officer receives a 911 call and the radio goes out, are there thugs inside trying to jam the radio so the alarm doesn't get through?”

All of the illegal aliens were arrested the next day at their rented Huntington home, WABC said, adding that the Department of Homeland Security had flagged them all as potential threats.

police said Immigration and Customs Enforcement was notified and “one defendant was remanded,” but the remaining five were “released without bail.”

WABC reported that authorities were unable to take the remaining five suspects into custody because their crimes were not eligible for bail.

Police added that two of the suspects did not report the electronic monitors, but three who did had their electronic monitors disconnected. The department announced the disconnection occurred in New Jersey.

All suspects are charged with robbery and criminal mischief, according to WABC.

New York bail laws again at the center of controversy

Long Island authorities are seeking changes to New York state bail laws in response to the incident, the agency said.

WABC reported that neither Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman nor his law enforcement partners would comment on the situation.

“It's absolutely disgraceful,” Blakeman said.

“We're sick of it. We need to change these laws. We want to give judges back their discretion and let them do their job,” said Anne Donnelly, the county's district attorney.
