Arrests from Los Angeles anti-immigration protests keep rising: District Attorney

Last month’s violent anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles have led to over 40 arrests, including a teenager facing attempted murder charges and an individual charged with hitting a police officer with a flagpole.

“The large-scale protests may have subsided for now, but our work continues,” LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated on Tuesday. “We are still examining evidence, identifying suspects, and pursuing charges where necessary.”

The disruptive protests were a reaction to a nationwide crackdown by federal immigration agents enforcing President Trump’s deportation orders for undocumented immigrants.

The financial implications of the riots are significant, tallying up to over $32 million in damages to the city, alongside numerous costs for police overtime.

As for the arrested individuals, the 17-year-old suspect’s name hasn’t been disclosed due to his age; he faces charges including attempted murder and assault on a peace officer, along with misdemeanor riot charges.

Robert Amaya, aged 49, was accused of assault with a deadly weapon during the protests, reportedly brandishing a knife near an 11-year-old girl.

Patrick Munoz, 37, faced charges for resisting arrest and assault after allegedly using a flagpole against police officers at a hotel where protesters mistakenly thought ICE agents were present.

In separate incidents, Dana Whitson, 66, and Iran Castro, 29, were charged for assaulting a police horse. Additionally, twin sisters Antonia and Lucia Aguilar Cole, both 27, were charged for engaging in a scuffle with officers by throwing plastic bottles.

Numerous others have been charged with offenses ranging from rioting to misconduct and assault.
