Main Events

25 minutes: Odegaard tried to pass to Havertz behind Brighton's high line, but Jean-Paul van Hecke turned and intercepted it before the Arsenal striker produced a perfect strike over the Dutch defender.

24th minute: From the right side of the Arsenal penalty area, Joel Veltman sent a rugby-style Garry Owen towards the far post, where David Raya, under pressure from Joao Pedro, picked up the ball.

Share

23 minutes: Bukayo Saka's passing was terrible, his inswinging ball being cleared at the near post.

Share

21 minutes: Odegaard received the pass and continued playing, and shortly thereafter Arsenal were awarded a corner kick.

Share

19 minutes: The match was stopped and Martin Odegaard injured his ankle after being caught by Yankuba Minthe, who seemed to be trying everything to get away in midfield, so Odegaard could receive treatment.

Share

18 minutes: Running towards the edge of the six-yard box, Martin Odegaard met a cross from the left wing, connected on a volley and side-footed the ball straight into Bert Verbruggen.

Share

16th minute: Brighton substitutions: James Milner was forced off with injury and was replaced by 20-year-old Sweden international Yassine Ayari.

Share

11 min: Ben White's shot hit Lewis Dunk's hand inside the Brighton penalty box, but Arsenal didn't get a penalty. I've seen worse penalties awarded. In the lead-up to the shot, Saka had again challenged and beat Hinshelwood, already dominating the young Brighton left-back.

Share

9 min: Saka got in behind Hinshelwood again but couldn't really test Verbruggen with a low angled shot towards the near post.

Share

7 min: Jack Hinshelwood fouls Saka on the right side of the Brighton penalty area. Arsenal free kick. Saka's low free kick is blocked by Caulo Mitoma. The ball goes to Odegaard, who fires a high-and-low flop shot over the defence and onto the edge of the six-yard box. Saka's volley is blocked by Verbruggen.

Share

6 min: Against his former club, Leandro Trossard took on Lewis Dunk and crossed towards the far post, but his pass to Havertz was too high.

Share

5 minutes: Arsenal had the better of the early stages but Joao Pedro won possession in his own half, only for a loose pass into the penalty area to be intercepted by Thomas Partey, resulting in them losing possession again.

Share

3 minutes: Bukayo Saka cut inside past Jack Hinshelwood on the right and forced a save from Bert Verbruggen at the near post before Jean-Paul van Hecke cleared the ball for Brighton.

Brighton team latest news

Brighton midfielder Matt O'Reilly is ruled out for the time being after a nasty tackle by Crawley Town's Jay Williams in the ninth minute of his debut on Tuesday night, with Fabian Haselaer subsequently revealing that the Denmark international would need to undergo surgery on his ankle.

Solly March is also out with a knee injury, while Matt Weafer has missed the last two games with a minor injury but is expected to remain in the squad.

Turkish utility player Ferdi Kadioglu, who joined from Fenerbahce this week for a whopping £26million, has already suffered a muscle injury in training.

Bert Verbruggen returned from injury to make his first appearance of the season against Crawley Town and is likely to start today in place of goalkeeper Jason Steele. Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour joined Napoli yesterday.

Arsenal team latest news

One of the big news stories on transfer deadline day was the signing of Raheem Sterling from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal, but the winger was not included in today's squad as he was not registered in time, but he was at the Emirates Stadium to watch his new team-mates in action.

It's been a week of ups and downs for Mikel Merino, who joined the club from Real Sociedad on Wednesday but injured his shoulder in his first training session with his new teammates. The unlucky midfielder sustained the injury in a collision with Gabriel and manager Mikel Arteta expects him to be out for “several weeks”.

Gabriel Jesus missed last weekend's game against Villa Park with a groin injury but the condition is not thought to be serious and he is expected to return after the international break.

Kieran Tierney is still recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained during Scotland's Euros group game against Switzerland which forced him to miss the match, while fellow full-back Tomiyasu Takehiro continues to recover from a knee injury which caused him to miss pre-season.

England international Aaron Ramsdale, who served as Arsenal's reserve goalkeeper for the whole of last season and the opening two games of this season, is hoping to resume his career with a permanent move to Southampton.
