Actor and TV host Mario Lopez recently addressed accusations of supporting President Donald Trump in a now-deleted Instagram comment, as reported by Buzzfeed last month.
Lopez’s involvement was called into question after a video titled “Exposing Latino MAGA Artists” labeled him a “MAGA” supporter. This was based on past instances where he had supported a UFC event at the White House and followed Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr. The video also included interviews from when Lopez spoke with Trump in 2016 during his first presidential campaign.
According to reports, Lopez denied any political support for Trump and clarified that he did not attend the UFC Freedom 250 fight. He emphasized, “We need to get our facts straight. I interviewed Mr. Trump multiple times while he was on ‘The Apprentice,’ and I was actually in D.C. filming a CBS special about civics pageants for kids at that White House event.”
Lopez expressed that his support of the UFC was more about his friendship with UFC CEO Dana White rather than any political stance. He shared that, “I couldn’t care less about politics. Honestly, I’m not political. It’s just too divisive for me. I focus on my family, my community, my culture, and my faith. God bless you all, but please don’t spread misinformation.”
His former “Extra” co-host, Tanika Ray, weighed in, claiming that the accusations against Lopez were accurate. She expressed her disapproval but hoped the situation would prompt Lopez to think more critically about his stance. She added that it was “confusing” for her that he identifies as Mexican and yet aligns with MAGA, but noted that ultimately, it was his choice and he seemed happy with it.
Lopez, who generally steers clear of political discussions in the public eye, has been more vocal about his Christian beliefs. In a past interview with Trump, he identified himself as “Latino, who also happens to be conservative, and the child of Mexican immigrants.”
