A firefighter has been arrested for allegedly starting a fire on a school bus during celebrations for the Knicks’ NBA championship win last month, according to officials.
Jonathan Strus, 30, was taken into custody on Monday morning at his residence in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He is suspected of igniting a charter bus fire on West 42nd Street on June 14, shortly after the Knicks secured the championship, their first in 53 years, as reported by the FDNY.
Fire officials claim Strus broke into a charter bus meant for transporting World Cup participants between the Port Authority Bus Terminal and MetLife Stadium around 2:47 a.m.
Authorities noted that surveillance footage captured the fire erupting shortly after Strus exited the bus.
The flames quickly spread to the vehicle and nearby cars, prompting a swift response from firefighters who managed to extinguish the blaze.
After conducting an investigation, FDNY Fire Marshals concluded that the fire had been intentionally set. They collaborated with NYPD Arson and Explosions Detectives and ATF Special Agents to identify Strus as the suspect.
Strus is facing a federal arson charge, according to the police report.
In a released mugshot, Strus is seen with long black hair, a beard, and a distinctive pout.
“This fire occurred on a busy street during a celebratory night, putting bystanders and first responders at risk,” said Fire Marshal Lilian Bonsignore in a statement.
Bonsignore also emphasized that the FDNY is committed to working closely with public safety partners to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.
“This arrest demonstrates the efficacy of our collaboration with the ATF and NYPD, as well as the thoroughness of our Fire Marshals in piecing together evidence during a complex investigation,” she added.
Strus is among many fans arrested amid a string of violent incidents linked to celebrations following the Knicks’ title win.
At least 63 individuals were arrested during the chaotic festivities, which included a 17-year-old who was shot in the leg and four others who suffered stab wounds.
