Art Schallock, Oldest Living Ex-Major Leaguer, Dead At 100

Art Sharock was the oldest living former Major League Baseball (MLB) player and died at the age of 100.

On Saturday, the life of Sharon Rock's aid and his family announced that the former Yankee had passed away on Thursday.

“He passed away peacefully at the age of 100 in the loving care community in Sonoma, California. He would have been 101 in April,” the family said.

“My beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend Art lived an incredible life, from serving his country in World War II to achieving his dream of playing major league baseball. As a pitcher for the New York Yankees, he was part of the sport's historic era and contributed to multiple World Series championships. Beyond baseball, Art was known for his kindness, humor and deep gratitude for the people around him. He lived a life filled with precious friendship, family and passion for the sport that defined much of his journey.”

At age 27 in 1951, Sharock was called to play for the Yankees, and was later replaced by 19-year-old Mickey Mantle.

Sharock won three World Series rings from 1951 to 1953.

Before finishing in Baltimore in 1955, during a big league career of more than five years, mostly with the Yankees, Sharock went 6-7 with a 4.02 ERA of over 58 games, reaching 14 innings. He hit a 77.

Sharock would have turned 101 on April 25th.th.

Sharock inherited the title of the oldest living player after George Elder's death in July 2022.
