Arte Moreno states that winning is not among the top five priorities for Angels fans

Angels Owner’s Comments Spark MLBPA Outrage

The Major League Baseball Players Association is expressing strong discontent over remarks made by Arte Moreno, owner of the Los Angeles Angels.

During a recent press conference, Moreno mentioned that the primary concern among fans is “affordability” when it comes to attending games, as reported by a local news outlet. He further stated, “Believe it or not, winning is not in the top five” priorities for fans, referencing the organization’s internal metrics.

Bruce Meyer, the newly appointed president of the MLBPA, responded by highlighting that players are inherently competitive and strive to win. He acknowledged that the players noticed Moreno’s comments and found them troubling.

It’s hard to ignore the implication behind such statements, particularly for players like Mike Trout, whose playoff appearances have been lacking since 2014. This extends the frustration, especially since the team’s last winning season was years ago, with only one season above .500 recorded since then.

The Angels, even with star players like Shohei Ohtani and Trout, have been unable to make significant strides in recent seasons. Last year, the team ended with a disappointing record, finishing last in their division.

Given the large market in Los Angeles, one might expect the Angels to be perennial contenders, but that’s not the case. In contrast, the Los Angeles Dodgers have garnered significant attention and admiration, thanks to their consistent success and deep roster.

Meyer emphasized the need for a shift in focus, remarking, “It’s surprising to say winning is not a priority.” In the meantime, Moreno seems intent on enhancing the fan experience—aiming to ensure safety and affordability at Angel Stadium.

Despite being worth an estimated $5 billion, Moreno’s strategy is drawing scrutiny as he looks to improve the team’s presence both on and off the field. His future plans for payroll and team branding remain to be seen.
