Artemis II Pilot Victor Glover Encourages Teamwork Over Individualism

Nasa astronaut Victor Glover, involved in the Artemis II mission, emphasizes that focusing on collective success rather than individual accolades is key. Instead of dwelling on the media’s emphasis on his race, the 50-year-old pilot prefers to highlight the crew’s groundbreaking spaceflight on April 6, which set a record for the farthest humans have traveled from Earth.

During a recent Q&A session on “CBS Morning,” Glover’s commitment to teamwork shone through. When asked by 11-year-old Ameya how it felt to be the first person of color to orbit the moon, he reflected on the pressure of individual accolades, noting that such thoughts can hinder performance. He expressed, “I focused on working with this team and trying to be a good teammate,” reinforcing the notion that collaboration drives success.

He also took a moment to visually underscore his point by pointing to the NASA logo and U.S. flag, indicating the importance of these symbols over his own name, which he referred to less emphatically.

Beyond Racial Milestones

Glover has faced numerous questions regarding being the “first black man” to travel to the moon since the mission was announced. In an earlier interaction, he expressed hope that society would eventually move beyond such distinctions, emphasizing, “This is human history, not just black history or women’s history.”

Acknowledging Faith

The astronaut is also vocal about his Christian faith, prioritizing it over racial identity. Just before the lunar mission, he shared his perspective on love and duty during a live radio broadcast, referencing Christ’s teachings. Upon his return to Earth, he reiterated his commitment to public expressions of gratitude, stating, “I wanted to publicly thank God, and I want to thank God again.”
