While many fans were focused on the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, a peculiar baseball game unfolded 4,500 miles away.
The Milwaukee Brewers faced off against the Oakland Athletics at Las Vegas Stadium—their first game in Vegas since the franchise’s move was announced.
Milwaukee edged out Oakland 15-14 in a thrilling 12-inning contest. The game’s total of 29 runs shattered the MLB season high of 25, set in a May game where the Giants triumphed 19-6 over the Rockies. The Brewers slightly outperformed the Athletics, 18-16.
At Las Vegas Stadium, the ball was, unsurprisingly for a minor league venue, flying out of the park, with both teams combining for 11 home runs.
Of those, the Athletics hit seven; Nick Kurtz and Tyler Soderstrom accounted for four of them.
For the Brewers, Andrew Vaughn contributed a home run and led with four RBIs, while teammates Bryce Turan, William Contreras, and Jake Bowers each had three RBIs. Soderstrom matched Vaughn with four RBIs and hit two home runs.
During the game, both teams cycled through seven pitchers, leading to an impressive total of 441 pitches thrown, which is a season record.
The starting pitchers, Kyle Harrison for the Brewers and Jeffrey Springs for the Athletics, combined for 13 runs. Lasting 4 hours and 14 minutes, this game became the longest of the season.
The game was tied at 10-10 after regular innings. Both teams scored four runs in the 10th, leaving it tied again at 14-14. It wasn’t until the 11th inning that the score remained unchanged, but in the top of the 12th, Jeff McNeil mishandled Turan’s grounder, allowing Christian Yelich to score the winning run.
The Brewers, currently leading the Central Division, have been on a scoring spree—putting up seven or more runs in their last five games.
The Athletics are set to move to a new stadium in Las Vegas for the beginning of the 2028 season.
