Large fight occurs in FIFA Fanzone on Washington's National Mall during USMNT World Cup match

A chaotic scene unfolded at the FIFA Fan Zone on the National Mall in Washington, where a large group of soccer fans were seen brawling during the World Cup match between the United States and Belgium. Unfortunately, the USMNT lost the game 4-1.

Reports indicate that the disturbances began with a couple of minor altercations, which quickly escalated into fans scuffling and even throwing punches. Video captured one individual putting another in a headlock, leading to a fall.

Fans added to the mayhem by tossing plastic bottles filled with water and exchanging blows.

A spokesperson for U.S. Park Police informed that one person was escorted out of the Fan Zone, though it remains unclear if they were directly involved in the fight.

The extent of injuries, if any, has not been disclosed, leaving fans to wonder about the situation.

Despite the U.S. loss, many gathered at the National Mall to enjoy the games broadcasted on a large screen. Upcoming matches, including the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, will still be shown at Fan Park.

This year’s World Cup coincides with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

Keith Clack, CEO of Freedom 250, emphasized the significance of the Fan Zone, stating it will serve as a venue for people worldwide to unite through sports, celebrate freedom, and share experiences near some of America’s most famous landmarks.

The U.S. team faced Belgium in a Round of 16 match in Seattle, a stage they haven’t reached since 2002. Belgium initially took the lead with a goal from Charles de Ketelaere, but Malik Tillman equalized. Soon after, De Ketelaere scored again, followed by Hans Vanaken capitalizing on a defensive misstep.

Romelu Lukaku, a former Chelsea striker, was noted for his impressive record with four wins and one loss in the tournament.

The match was further complicated by FIFA’s controversial decision to revoke a red card given to Folarin Balogun during a previous match against Bosnia.

This Friday, Belgium is set to play against Spain in Los Angeles.

Authorities have been contacted for further details regarding the brawl.
