Ryan Lasko’s Condition After Surgery
Ryan Lasko, the Athletics’ No. 18 prospect, is now in stable condition following spinal decompression and stabilization surgery for a fracture in his C6-C7 vertebra. This injury occurred during a distressing collision in a game earlier this week.
On Tuesday, while playing center field for Double AA Midland, Lasko and right fielder Devin Taylor had a severe collision while pursuing a ball. Lasko, 24, was down for ten minutes before being carted off the field and taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, where the surgery was performed.
Currently, Lasko cannot feel his legs. Dr. Jonathan Poggi, who conducted the surgery, expressed cautious optimism about Lasko possibly regaining some sensation, though he noted this could take a significant amount of time.
Mark Coetzee Discusses Lasko’s Injury
In reflecting on the incident, coach Mark Coetzee described the collision as both shocking and unfortunate. On the surface, the collision didn’t seem too severe, but a closer look revealed how serious it was. Lasko’s neck made direct contact with Taylor’s upper body, and he fell immediately, unable to move.
Fans who witnessed the event noted a small beacon of hope when Lasko managed to give a thumbs up midway through his ordeal. Still, it’s apparent that it may be quite some time before he’s back in a ballpark.
Coetzee commented on the situation before the following game, expressing hope that Lasko might regain feeling in his foot. He stressed the emotional toll this incident has had, urging everyone to keep Lasko, his family, and his teammates in their thoughts.
Lasko was selected in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Athletics, after playing at Rutgers University. Earlier this year, he had also spent some time with the Athletics during major league camp.
