On “CNN Newsnight” on Monday, host Abby Phillips said that Vice President Kamala Harris, a potential 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, has endorsed President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court proposal, “which I would say is pretty left-leaning,” but noted that Harris is trying to back away from the left-leaning positions she took as a presidential candidate during the 2020 campaign.
“What’s interesting is that Vice President Harris is talking about this proposal, which I would say is pretty far to the left, but at the same time, we’re hearing that she’s now backing away from some of the things that she supported in the 2020 election,” Phillips said. The New York TimesThe campaign said she no longer wants to ban fracking. She supports increased funding for border security, and that’s the Biden budget. She no longer supports single-payer health care, as she did four years ago. And while she still supports a ban on assault weapons, she no longer supports mandatory sales of weapons to the federal government.”
At the start of the show, Phillips said, “We knew Biden was considering this, but interestingly, this was before he dropped out of the race. And when reports came out that he was going to do something like this, I think it was widely seen as an attempt to shore up the support of the person at the top of the candidate. So now it’s been made public. I was a little surprised to see Vice President Harris make such a vocal statement in support of what’s written here, which is totally unrealistic in terms of what’s going to happen.”
Philip also noted that both members of the 2024 GOP field, former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), have changed their positions before.
