Ashlee Simpson refused to wear purity ring when she was 12 years old

Ashlee Simpson is reflecting on her rebellious past.

The “Piece of Me” singer spoke about growing up as an “independent soul” who wanted freedom from her parents from an early age on the podcast “Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen’s Wide Ideas.” Told.

“I ended up being much more rebellious than I was, because I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not doing that,'” she said. “I thought my father would say, ‘Oh, I can’t talk to this person. This is the ring that will save me.'” He tried to give it to me, who was 12 years old, and I “Oh, no, thank you. I don’t say anything when we have sex.’ ”

She went on to reveal that despite refusing a purity ring, she “didn’t have sex up until then.” [she] I was 17 years old. ”She just didn’t want people to know what she was doing and when.

In the early 2000s, many celebrities wore purity rings, including Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, the Jonas Brothers, and Ashley’s sister, singer Jessica Simpson.

She pointed out the differences in how her mother raised her and Jessica. “My mom really paid attention and made time to come and see me if I needed something different. And now that we’re all parents, , I was finally able to understand the other side’s position,” Simpson said. “Growing up, I was a really independent soul and wanted to do what I wanted. They had to set me free and let me have that moment. I had to at least make it feel free, and sometimes too free.”

Later in the podcast, Simpson talked about her infamous performance in which she was seen lip-syncing on a 2004 episode of “Saturday Night Live.”

Simpson had already performed her hit song “Piece of Me,” and when she returned to the stage to sing “Autobiography,” the wrong song started playing over the speakers, making it clear that she wasn’t singing it live. The audience was shocked. A nervous Ashley danced for a few seconds and left the stage.

“I’ve written all these songs and done all this work and you’re so close to taking all the credit and you’re like, ‘No,'” she said on the podcast. Ta. “It taught me humility and taught me a lot about myself and my own personal strengths… [and] How to get back up and move on again. ”

At the time, Simpson said she was forced to lip-sync after losing her voice due to a flare-up of acid reflux disease. A year later, she returned to the “SNL” stage to perform songs from her second album, “I Am Me.” “It was very scary,” she admitted.

“For me, it was like I sulked for a week until I had to be like, ‘Okay, I need to go on all the steroids and get my voice and get back on stage and figure this out.’ ‘And I feel like I owe it to the fans and myself, and that’s what I did,” she said. “What was harder for me was everyone bringing it up and I just let it go.”
