Police in Suffolk County reported that they arrested a suspect following an attempted robbery. The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when officers responded to a call about someone trying to steal from a car on Gibbs Road, near Coolidge Avenue in Amity Harbor, around 12:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers apprehended 19-year-old Marcello Martinez at the intersection of East Gibbs Road and West Concourse.
Meanwhile, his associate, 22-year-old Stephen Vasquez, initially escaped but was later found hiding underneath a nearby vehicle.
During the attempt to flee, Vasquez allegedly stabbed an officer and inflicted additional injuries with a blade. The officer received immediate medical attention, including tourniquets for his injuries, and was treated at a local hospital before being released.
Officers successfully disarmed Vasquez and made his arrest. He is facing multiple charges including second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Martinez, a resident of North Babylon, was charged with possession of robbery tools and possession of stolen property. Both suspects are set to appear in court on Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
