Assault Victim Rep. Angie Craig Says Trump's Approach to Crime is 'Unjustified'

Rep. Angie Craig Critiques Trump’s Crime Control Measures in Washington, DC

Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) is openly criticizing President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at combating crime in Washington, DC, despite having experienced an assault in the city herself earlier this year.

On Tuesday, Craig took to social media to share a screenshot of an Associated Press article, stating that Trump’s approach to controlling crime is merely a way to “buy” votes and labeling it “totally unfair and a waste of taxpayers’ dollars.”

“If the president had genuinely intended to enhance safety in DC,” she reflected, her statement carried a tone of disbelief.

However, many social media users did not overlook Craig’s apparent inconsistency on this issue. One user questioned her viewpoint, asking if she wanted to “attack many other people just like you?” Another user pointed out, “How are there elitists? You, perhaps? The poorest affected by crime support it.” Someone else expressed surprise over her comments, questioning why she wasn’t more focused on ensuring safety for DC residents and visitors.

Craig’s remarks came in response to Trump’s announcement earlier this week, where he stated he would invoke Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rules Act and place the DC Metropolitan Police Department under federal control. Additionally, the president noted that the National Guard would be deployed to assist with the crime issues impacting local residents.

Notably, Craig herself was attacked in a DC apartment building back in February 2023. At the time, she expressed that this incident was the 13th she had faced, and the only reason the attacker was apprehended was due to her status as a member of Congress.

She elaborated on her thoughts, saying, “What do you want to happen? I want Americans, especially women, to feel secure in their communities. To me, this means we must prioritize public safety. At the same time, I reflect on the circumstances leading to such violent acts — addiction, homelessness, mental health issues. Did the individual receive adequate help in a timely manner?” Her goal is to prevent future attacks, emphasizing the interconnected nature of these societal challenges.

The man accused of attacking Craig has been identified as Kendrid Halil Hamlin. As reported by NBC News, he chased her into an elevator, physically assaulted her, and is now serving a 27-month prison sentence for his actions.

Interestingly, Breitbart News noted in 2022 that some of Craig’s key staff were advocates for a left-leaning agenda focused on policing reforms.

During a recent media event, Trump signaled that his administration would strive to maintain transparency regarding the federal oversight of the city’s police department.
