Assistant to Howard Rubin accused of suspected sex trafficking and lavish living

Federal prosecutors claim that the personal assistant of fraudulent investor Howard Rubin will enjoy a lavish lifestyle funded by a former Soros Fund Management Portfolio Manager.

Jennifer Powers, 45, appeared earlier this week in Brooklyn Federal Court and, according to court documents, isn’t facing charges related to sexual trafficking or transporting women for commercial sex. Instead, prosecutors allege that from 2018 to 2023, Rubin supported nearly every facet of Powers’ life—covering expenses like Manhattan apartments, credit card bills, private school tuition for her children, and mortgage payments on their home in Texas.

Powers, along with her husband Stephen Powers, faces added charges stemming from allegations that they deliberately filed a joint tax return for the years 2018 to 2024 without reporting Jennifer’s earnings. The indictment states that Powers did not declare any wages or income from employment.

Documents indicate that their tax filings reflected only the gross income from Stephen’s disc jockey business for the tax years 2018 and 2019.

At the same time, prosecutors state that Jennifer played a significant role in procuring women for abuse in a Central Park penthouse, which included a soundproofed room referred to as the “dungeon” from 2011 to 2019. Reports suggest that Rubin and Powers spent more than $1 million in efforts to recruit women, some of whom had previous experiences of sexual abuse or addiction.

“The defendant allegedly exploited Rubin’s standing to entice future victims, compelling them to endure unimaginable physical harm,” Christopher Leia, assistant director of the FBI in New York, stated following the filing of charges.

Rubin is also accused of covering legal costs from a 2017 lawsuit filed by several playboy models he allegedly mistreated. A judgment from that case found Rubin liable, awarding the victims $3.9 million.

Powers has been released on an $850,000 bond and is under house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor. Previously, she worked as an alternative teacher in Texas but was later removed from her position. Rubin, meanwhile, has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail until the next court appearance on October 20th.

As of now, Jennifer Powers’ lawyers have not responded to requests for comment, and attempts to reach Rubin’s attorneys have also been unsuccessful.
