Astros Player’s Bat Confiscated During Game
In a recent matchup, the Houston Astros faced off against the New York Yankees, ultimately losing 8-4 at Daikin Park. During the ninth inning, Astros center fielder Taylor Trammell’s bat was taken for inspection. It was a curious incident that has left some questions lingering.
Trammell, 27, had a notable moment in that same inning where he faced Yankees pitcher David Bednar. That’s when Yankees manager Aaron Boone approached the umpires, raising concerns about Trammell’s bat, which led to a check.
Home Plate Judge Adrian Johnson collected the bats, and all four umpires gathered to discuss the situation. They even reached out to the MLB Replay Office in New York, handing over the bat for further examination.
“I noticed something odd during this series and reached out to the league,” Boone shared with reporters post-game. “You’re not supposed to modify your bat in any way. I wouldn’t accuse him, but it did seem questionable.” He pointed out that there was some discoloration on the bat’s label, but he didn’t want to assume it was due to tampering. “I’m not sure if that was natural wear or something else,” he added.
Trammell expressed confusion over the inspection, stating he respects Boone, but simply didn’t understand why his bat was scrutinized in particular. He mentioned, “I played five games with the Yankees last season and over a hundred with their Triple-A team, so I’m a bit puzzled.”
After the game, Trammell reiterated his respect for Boone but insisted he didn’t quite get the reasoning behind the check. According to him, the Yankees had hinted they believed his bat may have been “overshaved,” and he was candid about his ignorance regarding the term. “Honestly, I have no idea what that even means,” he said.
As it stands, the Yankees celebrated their victory and wrapped up the series. They’re set to take on the Toronto Blue Jays next, while the Astros gear up for their own match against another opponent soon.
