The bus carrying 61 students and teachers was returning to a high school in the Jakarta suburb of Depok late Saturday from a graduation ceremony in the hilly resort of Bandung, West Java police spokesman Jules Abraham Avast said. .
Police said the car lost control on a downhill slope, left its lane, hit multiple cars and motorcycles, and crashed into a utility pole.
Avast said nine people died at the scene and two more – a teacher and a local driver – later died in hospital.
He also said 53 more people were hospitalized with injuries, several of them in critical condition.
“The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but preliminary investigation indicates that the bus’s brakes had failed,” Avast said.
