At least 25 people were killed when a market was shelled in parts of Russia-occupied Ukraine on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.
Denis Pushilin, the head of the Russian-installed authority in Donetsk, said another 20 people, including two children, were injured in the attack on the outskirts of the city, according to the Associated Press. He claimed that the shells were fired by Ukrainian forces.
According to the newswire, Pushilin claimed that the area was attacked with 155-millimeter and 152-millimeter guns, and that shells were fired from the direction of the Ukrainian cities of Krakhove and Krasnokhorivka.
The newswire noted that Kiev had not commented on the incident and could not independently verify the claims.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a translated statement: called The incident was a “barbaric act of terrorism against Russian civilians.”
“The Kyiv regime's terrorist attacks clearly demonstrate its lack of political will for peace and conflict resolution through diplomatic means,” the statement said. “It is clear that all the goals and objectives of special military operations must be achieved. Security threats and terrorist acts must not come from the territory of Ukraine.”
A fire also broke out at a chemical transport terminal in Russia's Ustiluga port after two explosions, the Associated Press reported, citing local media reports. Local media reported that the port was attacked by a Ukrainian drone and that a gas tank exploded.
Yuri Zapaladsky, head of Russia's Kingisepp region, where the port is based, reported there were no casualties and the area was on high alert, according to the Associated Press.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also announced on Sunday that Moscow's forces had captured the village of Krovmarne in Ukraine's Kharkov region, the newswire added. The Ukrainian military confirmed that the settlement had been occupied and described the incident as a “temporary phenomenon.”
The war between Ukraine and Russia approaches its second anniversary next month, with thousands of soldiers killed on both sides.
