ATF Director Comments on Gun Sales in Virginia
On Thursday, ATF Director Robert Secada shared with Breitbart News that he collaborated with his agency to fast-track the approval for Virginians wanting to buy firearms before new state gun laws take effect.
According to reports, a ban on AR-15s and similar semi-automatic rifles, labeled “assault weapons” by Democrats, is set to start on July 1, 2026.
This gun control measure prevents the sale of AR-15s and similar rifles but does allow individuals who owned them prior to the cutoff date to keep them. As a result, there’s been a noticeable spike in sales for these rifles due to the impending regulations.
For instance, on June 7, 2026, it was noted that sales of firearms, AR-15 components, and high-capacity magazines were climbing dramatically in Virginia.
The buying frenzy persisted right up until the moment before the Democratic-led ban took effect. With the deadline looming, Secretary Secada allocated more ATF resources to make sure that responsible gun owners could swiftly secure their purchases and get their firearms home before the new rules hit.
Secada commented, “This is a question posed to law-abiding gun owners in Virginia. While ATF is not involved, ATF was in a position to at least give these people, if they chose to do so, the opportunity to submit their applications and obtain guns in accordance with the law by the first deadline in July.”
Secada acknowledged that prioritizing Virginians might require reallocating resources away from other regions, but he and his team feel it’s the right approach.
He elaborated on how within the ATF, there are regional representatives who handle the approval of applications from prospective gun buyers. To meet the urgent demands in Virginia, he redirected ATF staff from other locations to expedite the process there.
Secada emphasized the importance of being able to adapt when law-abiding gun owners confront state-level restrictions, expressing hope that the ATF can provide support during these transitions.
