She emphasized the importance for Democrats to create a broad coalition in response to the various impacts of the Trump administration, both economically and socially.
Co-host William Brangham pointed out that Republicans had initially considered using the upcoming election to position themselves against the Honorable. However, they’re not leveraging that tactic now, indicating a shift towards pragmatism. He referenced a comment from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who mentioned that the era of “woke 1.0” is past, posing a question about whether that makes people happy.
Atkins Stoll responded that while the quality of candidates is crucial in campaigns, gubernatorial races are quite specific, and their results can’t always be interpreted nationally. She highlighted that certain traditionally blue states, like Massachusetts, tend to elect Republican governors sometimes as a form of checks and balances. In 2020, there was a unique urgency following the lockdowns and the decline of the Trump administration, further complicating voters’ needs. She noted that topics like housing affordability and rising gas prices resonate strongly right now, and Republicans seem to be struggling to address those issues effectively.
She further remarked on the consequences of these emerging discussions, indicating that black women face heightened scrutiny, and there is a noticeable decline in the federal workforce. Additionally, she noted the aggressive stance of the Republican Party against transgender and LGBTQ individuals. There’s been a clear attempt to eliminate DEI initiatives, with the president even putting up signs labeling certain statements as false. The challenges faced by black and brown Americans are significant. Stoll concluded by stating that if people truly want change, they should reconsider their voting choices; sticking with the Republicans may not bring about the desired outcomes.
