Atlanta Braves report minor league player Jonathan Matos Morales who is accused of leaving the scene of a fatal crash in Florida

The Atlanta Braves have turned over a former minor league player who is accused of leaving the scene of a deadly accident in Florida. This incident involved a crash that took the life of a father of four, and the team’s officials discovered the suspect’s vehicle on their property.

Jonathan Matos Morales, 18, was behind the wheel of a 2022 black Ford Mustang on Interstate 75 in Manatee County early Monday morning. He collided with a Chevrolet Trailblazer that was situated in the center lane, leading to a sequence of events that resulted in a semi-truck being struck and ultimately rolling over after swerving.

After hitting the Trailblazer, Morales reportedly paused for a moment before fleeing the scene heading southbound.

The driver of the semi, identified as Owen Facey, 34, tragically lost his life at the scene, leaving behind four children.

The SUV’s driver, a 63-year-old individual from Palmetto, sustained minor injuries according to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Officer Ken Watson mentioned that there were sightings of Morales’ Mustang “weaving in and out of lanes” prior to the collision. He also stated that Facey was unable to react in time after the Trailblazer was pushed into the semi’s path.

“When you’re driving a high-performance vehicle like that, especially loaded down in the early morning, stopping isn’t exactly easy,” Watson noted.

“The organization reached out to the Florida Highway Patrol, indicating they may have found the vehicle involved,” Officer Watson explained. His confidence regarding the ownership of the vehicle was particularly high.

In confirming Morales was associated with their minor league system, the Braves issued a statement expressing their full cooperation with law enforcement and extending their condolences to those affected by the tragic event.

The 18-year-old was arrested later on suspicion of vehicular homicide and is being held in the Manatee County Jail for having left the site of a fatal crash.

During his initial court appearance, Morales was granted a $200,000 bail, placed on supervised release, and required to surrender his passport upon release. His legal team argued for a reduction to $50,000, highlighting Morales’ limited income and lack of a prior criminal record; he has been a U.S. citizen since moving from Puerto Rico at a young age.

However, the state attorney’s office resisted this appeal, reminding the court of a prior speeding citation where Morales was clocked at 131 mph in a 50 mph zone and mentioned concerns about him potentially fleeing if released.

The accident remains under investigation.

Morales had joined the Braves as a catching prospect on July 23, 2025, and was soon assigned to the FCL Braves. His career path led him to play for a professional team back in Puerto Rico.

In the wake of the accident, Facey’s family describes him as a hero, sharing that he tried to avoid the collision with the Trailblazer. “He attempted to save the car, and then it just rolled over,” his mother, Judy Thomas, said.

She mentioned that her son had only been driving for a short while and was working at a trucking business he co-owned at the time of the crash.

“When I fell over, there was no answer when my cousin called my name, and when I called him on his cell phone, there was no answer,” she recalled, clearly heartbroken. “A part of my life is gone.”
