Pacers Rookie Cam Jones Reflects on Police Encounter

After a harrowing experience last year where he was ordered out of a car at gunpoint by police during a chase, Pacers rookie Cam Jones is reconsidering his future in the NBA, as revealed by recently released body camera footage.

The incident took place on October 10, 2025, in Indianapolis, where Jones reportedly sped over 100 miles per hour and did not stop when signaled to pull over.

Footage shows officers instructing Jones to exit his vehicle and walk towards them slowly while aiming their weapons at him.

Eventually, at the age of 24, Jones complied with the officers’ demands and was handcuffed, maintaining that he hadn’t meant to evade them.

“It’s quite confusing right now,” he said. “Honestly, I saw your right turn signal and thought, ‘Maybe he’s trying to avoid me?’ So I was trying to get in your way.”

He explained that he was running late for practice, which is why he might have been driving erratically. The revelation that police intended to take him to jail shocked him.

“Are you going to jail?” he asked, to which the officer replied, “Yes. Reckless driving and resisting law enforcement.”

Jones expressed disbelief, saying, “But I didn’t know you were trying to pull me in.” The officer quipped back, “You could have fooled me.”

As Jones was being escorted to a police car, a Pacers assistant coach arrived but was not permitted to speak with him before leaving the scene.

During a brief conversation with an officer about his life, the officer pondered if Jones, standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, played point guard or shooting guard. Jones responded despondently, “I’m about to become a nobody.”

“Why not?” the officer asked. Jones replied, “I had no idea I was driving that fast.”

Eventually, Jones was taken to a nearby jail, where he was charged with reckless driving and resisting law enforcement. After his release, he issued an apology to his team and the media, referring to the incident as “a mistake I learned from.”

In January, prosecutors charged him with misdemeanor reckless driving, but the case was dismissed in March after he entered a pretrial diversion program, as per court records.

Jones was selected as the No. 38 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and played 37 games for the Pacers last season, averaging 4.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.
