AT&T customers are experiencing a nationwide outage that makes it impossible to make calls or access the internet.

AT&T users reported issues Tuesday in states including Florida, Georgia and Texas.

Officials in Virginia also reported problems and said they had been contacted by network providers that customers might have difficulty contacting 9-1-1.

“AT&T has contacted Hanover County to advise that customers across the country, including Hanover County, may experience issues calling 911,” a post from the Hanover County Department of Public Safety and Emergency Communications said.

But a company spokesman later told reporters that emergency services were “operating normally” and that customers were not affected. The notification was sent to the 911 call center “in error,” the spokesman said.

“There is a nationwide issue affecting customers’ ability to complete calls across carriers,” the spokesperson said. “Carriers are working to diagnose and resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”

“At this time, 911 services nationwide are operating normally and there is no impact to customers. We are working to correct the over-the-air impact notification that was sent in error to 911 call centers,” it added.
