Attacker Shot by Potential Victim; Police Refer to ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law

Authorities in Tallahassee, Florida, reported that a man who was hospitalized following a shooting incident was actually the aggressor during a confrontation on Sunday.

This event transpired at a Walgreen’s, as detailed by a local news outlet. Law enforcement stated that the injured man “aggressively approached” another individual, who responded by firing a shot that hit the assailant.

The assailant was taken to a nearby hospital and, fortunately, was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Following this, police and prosecutors decided against pressing charges on the armed citizen, referencing Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

Florida’s “stand your ground” law emerged after an incident in November 2004, when a 77-year-old man fatally shot an intruder in an RV where he and his wife were sheltering post-hurricane. After a thorough investigation lasting three months, it was concluded that the elderly man’s actions were justified.

The legislation aimed at supporting individuals’ right to defend themselves without the obligation to retreat if they are in a location they are legally allowed to be in during an attack. It was signed into law in 2005 by then-Governor Jeb Bush.

“Law-abiding citizens should not be victimized by the state or courts for failing to retreat from their own property or any location they have a right to be when facing an attack,” stated the National Rifle Association back in 2005 regarding the law’s enactment.

On another note, a recent statement from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office indicated that deputies responded to a situation at Graham’s Beach Grill, where they discovered 33-year-old Walter Butler with severe injuries after attacking another man due to a disagreement. Tragically, Butler later succumbed to his injuries.
