Attorney for Michael Cohen pushes Trump to testify, says client needs to ‘own his lying’

Michael Cohen’s lawyer on Tuesday directed former President Donald Trump to testify while acknowledging his client’s shortcomings.

Appearing on “American Report,” Davis commented on Cohen’s appearance in court, suggesting cross-examination “will not be easy” for his client.

Davis noted that Cohen had already been “attacked” under oath by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, among others. Trump’s lawyers also cross-examined Cohen at the New York financial fraud trial.

While answering questions, Davis urged Cohen to admit “his lies” and “guilt.”

He also defended his client against criticism from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), who suggested Cohen had a history of perjury.

“It’s pretty extravagant for a speaker to talk about a lie, even though he’s a proponent of the biggest lie by Donald Trump: not admitting defeat,” Davis said.

Still, Davis acknowledged that Cohen “struggles to maintain his composure” during the interrogation.

“The rest of the cross-examination will not be easy. But he has pulled himself together and rose to this challenge and testified before Congress and before Congress,” Davis added. “Now, where is Mr. Trump? He promised to testify.”

Lawyers said if Mr. Cohen answers questions calmly and honestly, jurors will find him trustworthy. Davis also urged Trump to do what Cohen claims he did and stand up and tell the truth.

Mr. Cohen cited Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team’s efforts to prove that the former president falsified business records in connection with a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. He is said to be a powerful witness.

Mr. Bragg indicted Mr. Trump on 34 counts of first-degree falsification of business records. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains his innocence.

Mr. Trump has long denied that he ever met Mr. Daniels.

Mr. Trump later made multiple payments of $35,000 to Mr. Cohen, who was serving as his personal attorney at the time. The total amount paid was $420,000.
