FBI Informant Released for Medical Treatment
The FBI informant whose accusations about Joe Biden and Hunter Biden allegedly receiving $10 million in bribes caused a significant uproar has been furloughed from prison for medical reasons, according to his attorney.
Alexander Smirnov, who pled guilty in December, received a six-year prison sentence for fabricating claims against the former U.S. president and for a separate tax evasion charge.
His lawyer, David Chesnoff, mentioned that Smirnov had been in need of crucial eye surgery, which had been repeatedly denied. This situation has led to a deterioration of his already troubling health issues.
“We are thankful that the Bureau of Prisons acknowledged the serious nature of his health and agreed to grant him the necessary long-term treatment,” Chesnoff added.
At 45, Smirnov is currently held in a federal facility in Los Angeles. However, his attorney did not specify when he would be released.
In May, a federal judge denied a request for Smirnov’s release, citing that he posed a flight risk. The legal team claims he is now legally blind.
Smirnov’s claims included details about the Bidens’ relationship with Burisma, a Ukrainian energy firm that paid Hunter Biden up to $1 million while his father was vice president and overseeing U.S. policy toward Ukraine.
The allegations, presented by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), have caused some strain on the ongoing efforts of House Republicans to impeach President Biden over his known interactions with foreign entities connected to his son and brother in countries like China, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.
Typically, releases from prison for health reasons last about 30 days, though they can be extended if necessary. Smirnov’s legal team is actively pursuing this medical furlough.
