Audio recording shows response to multiple casualties at Wichita soccer accident

Tragic Incident at Kansas Soccer Field

Audio from dispatch communications reveals the chaos that ensued after a driver allegedly drove into children and spectators at a soccer field in Kansas. This occurred on Saturday at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita.

Two individuals tragically lost their lives: a 6-year-old boy named Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both hailing from McPherson.

In addition to the fatalities, ten others were wounded, including five children. The woman, 34, who was driving the vehicle has been released without charges, according to police.

Investigation into Driver’s Release

Authorities have not indicated whether there will be any criminal charges against the driver, who was initially taken into custody. They mentioned that she was released pending the results of toxicology tests and a review of her Chevrolet pickup. Interestingly, she had two of her own children in the vehicle at the time; one of them was playing soccer on another field nearby.

Law enforcement is currently conducting interviews with the driver and over thirty witnesses, including the children who were present in the vehicle during the incident. The police consulted the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office before deciding to release her.

Details of the Incident

A 30-minute log of dispatch communications highlights the response efforts:

  • First responders reported at least 11 victims on site, with two categorized as severe emergencies.
  • Another responder noted nine patients, including “two code blacks” and “two code blues,” while further victims were still being assessed.
  • The incident was classified as a Level 3 mass-casualty situation, described as a “motor vehicle accident involving pedestrians.”
  • A five-year-old victim was noted to have sustained multi-system trauma from being struck, although assessed to be responsive, scoring 15 on the Glasgow Coma Scale.
  • Midway through the dispatch recording, it was mentioned that there was another victim found in the field, though it was unclear if this was a new discovery.

In the aftermath, the City of Wichita announced it would be installing temporary barriers around the complex until more permanent safety measures can be established.

City officials also stated that law enforcement would maintain a presence at the Stryker Sports Complex this weekend, along with local mental health support for affected families.

McPherson Mayor Jim Loving expressed his condolences, stating, “There’s nothing I can say that makes this right. This whole town is grieving with the families affected, and we will support you for as long as it takes.”

Wichita Police have indicated that this investigation remains ongoing and updates will be provided as available.
