Austin Reaves of the Lakers may make a comeback in Game 5 against the Rockets.

A few weeks back, Warriors coach Steve Kerr shared what he values most in players. He mentioned three key traits: a passion for the game, a love for teammates, and being well-liked by them in return.

Interestingly, he pointed out an opponent who fits this description—Austin Reeves. “I see that in Austin Reeves,” Kerr commented. “I coached him during the World Cup. Watching him play with the Lakers, you can really sense that everyone enjoys being on the court with him. He’s a fierce competitor and genuinely loves basketball. Those traits are often rare, especially in someone with so much skill. You can find that in Steph [Curry].”

Reeves has certainly made an impression. He transitioned from being undrafted to showcasing All-Star caliber talent. Originally hailing from a small town of about 1,200 residents, he’s now making a name for himself in Los Angeles. From a two-way player, he’s aiming for a maximum contract extension with the Lakers this summer that could reach approximately $250 million.

But now, he has just one thing left to prove: his ability to excel in the postseason.

Reeves first drew attention during the Lakers’ playoff run in 2023, where he played a crucial role in reaching the Western Conference Finals. He averaged about 13 points during the regular season, yet in the playoffs, he frequently exceeded 20 points in numerous games.

However, it’s worth noting that he faced challenges in the postseason last year, averaging only 16.2 points with a shooting percentage of 41.1%. After the Lakers were eliminated by the Timberwolves in the first round, it surfaced that he had been playing with a severe toe injury that hampered his mobility.

All eyes are now on Reeves as he gears up for his postseason debut on Wednesday. After suffering a torticollis sprain on April 2, he missed the first four games against the Rockets. With the Lakers leading the series 3-1, his return could be pivotal.

“I want to get back on the court as soon as I can,” Reeves said during practice on Tuesday, his first interview since the injury. “I feel good, I’m improving, and I’m really looking forward to getting out there tomorrow.”

His return could be significant. If he shines in these playoffs, he might solidify his case for a maximum contract extension worth $241 million over five years with the Lakers or $176.5 million over four years if he goes elsewhere.

This season, Reeves has established himself as a star but how he performs in the playoffs could leave a lasting impression. He is expected to decline his $14.9 million player option to explore free agency.

Reeves started the season as the first Lakers player since Kobe Bryant to score 25 points in five straight games, including back-to-back outings where he netted 51 and 41 points. He has emerged as a key offensive player, even surpassing LeBron James as the second scoring option behind Luka Doncic and showcasing impressive talent at just 41 years old.

But playoff performance will ultimately define his season.

Reeves expressed how tough it has been to sit out for nine games, including four playoff contests, saying, “I’ve been pretty miserable.”

He mentioned doing everything possible to prepare for his comeback and added, with a hint of humor, that he usually has a high pain tolerance. “When something really bothers me, it typically indicates there’s a problem.”

His primary goal now is to return to the court while minimizing the risk of re-injury.

As he stands on the brink of a comeback, there’s more at stake here than just advancing in the series against the Thunder.

Regardless of how Reeves performs, there will likely be considerable interest from teams. He’s earned it. However, thriving in the postseason could elevate him even more.

If he succeeds, he’ll be in a prime position to sign before reaching his contract cap. The journey from barely making the roster to competing at the highest level is truly impressive.

Yet, on the flip side, if he struggles, it could be a setback.

All eyes are indeed on Reeves. How he handles the pressure will certainly leave a lasting impact.
