Deonte Banks' comeback with the Giants carried on against the Cowboys

Deonte Banks Shines in Giants’ Win Against Cowboys

There were doubts about former draft pick Deonte Banks and whether he could transfer his strong performances in training camp to game situations. Well, he definitely made a point on Sunday, contributing four tackles and two pass defenses in the Giants’ 28-20 win over the Cowboys.

His impressive summer was reflected in his starting position at cornerback over Paulson Adebo, a move that, although noted on the depth chart, wasn’t explicitly acknowledged by head coach John Harbaugh. It’s interesting how that works, isn’t it? Sometimes, actions speak louder than words.

“I think Deonte did a great job,” said safety Jevón Holland. “I love his energy, demeanor, and how he treats his teammates. He earned that job for a reason, and I think everyone in the facility would agree with that.”

But it wasn’t all perfect for Banks. He did allow a 1-yard touchdown catch by CeeDee Lamb in the second quarter. Earlier in that same drive, you could hear a safety on the sidelines seemingly directing Banks about his position – perhaps just a reminder or a bit of frustration?

In the second half, Banks was in and out due to cramping, which isn’t ideal. But he displayed a renewed vigor in pursuit—specifically in defending against the run—showing more commitment than in his previous two seasons, which had been quite tough for him. He even managed to keep a receiver inbounds toward the end of the game, helping to run down the clock, and disrupted a pass that could have set up a crucial field goal attempt.

Paulson Adebo, worth a hefty $21.4 million against the salary cap, was supposed to be a big deal after being signed as a free agent, yet it seems he was overshadowed by both Banks and newcomer Greg Newsome II during the summer.

It’s been quite an uphill battle for Banks, a former first-round pick who, incredibly, didn’t play any defensive snaps in two games last December. Around that time, he started returning kickoffs just to get some playing time, and he continued that role in Sunday’s game.

On another note, cornerback Dru Phillips, who had struggled last season with penalties—nine in total—committed three pass interference calls against the Cowboys. He ranked quite high in penalties across the NFL last year, so it’s worth keeping an eye on his performance. Meanwhile, Ar’Darius Washington seems ready to challenge Phillips for a spot.

In a more personal moment, Bronx native Jose Alvarado, who plays for the Knicks, was honored on the field during the game’s second quarter, which added a nice touch to the atmosphere.

As for the Giants, they deactivated several players, including tight end Thomas Fidone II and running back Najee Harris, which was a bit surprising. Harris, in particular, seems to be in a tight competition for positions within the running back lineup, especially after he didn’t get the nod this time around. It’s possible things might shift from week to week, particularly with Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr., though Tracy didn’t help his case with a fumble during the red zone on his second carry.
