Austin Thompson admits guilt in the 2022 mass shooting in Raleigh that resulted in five deaths.

Teen Admits to Raleigh Shooting That Killed Five

An 18-year-old, Austin David Thompson, confessed on Wednesday to a shooting in Raleigh, North Carolina, that resulted in five fatalities, including his brother and a police officer. This admission came just a few days before his trial was set to begin.

Thompson pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder, along with multiple other charges, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, as reported by the Associated Press.

Prosecutors highlighted that Thompson was only 15 during the shooting incident in 2022 when he killed several individuals: his brother James, 52-year-old Nicole Connors, 29-year-old Officer Gabriel Torres of the Raleigh police, 34-year-old Mary Marshall, and 49-year-old Susan Karnatz. Initially slated for trial on state murder charges this month, he changed his plea instead.

His legal team revealed on Tuesday their intent to plead guilty, emphasizing that bypassing a trial would mitigate further trauma for the community and victims involved.

District Attorney Lorin Freeman indicated that Thompson’s case had been delayed due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound; however, his attorney posited that it caused significant brain damage.

In court, Thompson appeared in a quarter-zip sweater and slacks, and spoke briefly as Judge Paul Ridgway formally accepted the plea. Sentencing is set for February 2, but no plea agreement has been reached between Thompson and prosecutors.

Because he was a minor during the crime, Thompson won’t face the death penalty, but he could receive a life sentence without parole. Alternatively, state law allows for a possibility of parole after serving 25 years. Recent legal changes limit the maximum time juvenile offenders serve before being eligible for parole at age 40.

As details of the crime were presented, Assistant District Attorney Patrick Latour recounted events from October 13, 2022. According to him, Thompson first shot his brother and then, in a chilling sequence, moved through his neighborhood, attacking others before engaging with the police.

Details remained sparse concerning Thompson’s motives, with his lawyer stating that his brain injury has rendered it challenging to understand the reasons behind his actions. A note written by Thompson regarding his brother’s death was kept confidential due to court orders.

Following the hearing, some victims’ families expressed their feelings about the case. Robert Steele, engaged to one of the victims, stated that he believes Thompson should receive life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, asserting that justice must be served.

In a related note, Thompson’s father faced legal action, receiving a suspended sentence after admitting to improperly storing a firearm that was discovered with Thompson post-incident. Officials also confiscated numerous firearms and ammunition from their home, indicating a past interest in hunting within the family.
