103rd over: Australia 411-7 (Carey 51, Starc 7) Not a good start to the day from India. Jadeja does get one ball on the pads that he appeals for, but aside from that there’s a slow bit of fielding that lets Carey get back for two runs after placing a ball to square leg, then a misfield on the rope for four after a sweep goes fine. Carey gets Test fifty number nine, to go with his one hundred so far. It would help if he ever got to bat with the top order!

Hello from Brisbane. It’s steamy, it’s cloudy, it’s damp. The forecast is for showers, it’s just a matter of how many of them we get at the Gabba, after we also lost most of the first day.

India will be the happiest with rain, given that things didn’t go so well for them yesterday. Steve Smith century, Travis Head century, enough said. Alex Carey smashed Australia to 405 by stumps and will resume on 45 not out, along with Mitchell Starc.

So presumably Australia will bat on for a while, but they’ll have to think about the amount of time left in the match, with three likely rain-affected days.

main events
108 overs: Australia 431-8 (Carry 61, Lyon 0) Akash Deep was replaced by Bumrah after just a few overs. It makes me rattle! Carey fires a lofted cover drive and returns to the stands! Hey, it's me.
107 overs: Australia 424-8 (Carry 54, Lyon 0) Jadeja continued on and got through a quiet over after Carey's first ball for a single.
Wicket! stark c pant c bumrah 18, australia 423 for 8
106 overs: Australia 423-8 (53 carries) Bumrah gets 6 points! Starc hit him for four with a diagonal strike aimed straight at backward square leg, but Bumrah's slow ball pounced on Starc and he hit the keeper with the last ball of the over.
105th over: Australia 419-7 (Carry 52, Starc 14) Well, Stark likes to hit spin! He once hit six consecutive hits in an innings at the MCG, but with his first ball of the innings, Jadeja hit it well over midwicket.
104 overs: Australia 411-7 (Carry 51, Starc 7) Bumrah's voice could be heard from the other side. Maybe it's a little slow to get going after working so hard yesterday. Stark protects him well.
Half a century! Alex Carey 51 off 53 balls
103rd over: Australia 411-7 (Carry 51, Starc 7) Not a great start to the day from India. Jadeja got one ball into his pads which he appealed to, but apart from that there was some slow fielding to get two runs back after Carey put the ball to square leg and a misfield on the ropes for four after a sweep. Good luck conceding the point. Carey gets number 9 in Test 50, following his previous number 100. It would help if he ever comes to bat in the top order!
The start of the game was delayed slightly in Brisbane after warm-ups, but this was due to rain that had fallen earlier.
Of course, there is another Test match going on across the ditch in New Zealand, where England are dealing with a Kiwi counterattack. However…it started raining and the start of the game was delayed. Still, Rob Smyth has tools and you can join him here.
Yesterday was a big moment for Smith after a long wait. Below is a report from the field.
preamble
Jeff Lemon
Hello from Brisbane. It's steamy, cloudy, and humid. The weather forecast is predicting showers, but we lost most of the first day, so the question is how much rain will fall at the Gabba.
Given how things went wrong, India will be happiest when it rains Fair enough For them yesterday. Suffice it to say, Steve Smith's century, Travis Head's century. Alex Carey smashed Australia to 405 at the stumps and, along with Mitchell Starc, restarted from 45 not out.
So Australia will probably continue playing for a while, but they will have to factor in the remaining time of the match as they are likely to be affected by rain for three days.
