This Test has been a fascinating contest so far – the Australian bowlers looked to be on top early, but then a West Indies fightback starting with Kavem Hodge and building with Joshua Da Silva and Kevin Sinclair set them up for a solid first innings total of 311. When Australia finally bowled them out, they then went about losing all their wickets and for a while it appeared that 311 was an insurmountable total rather than a decent one. But again there were a few heroes that saved the innings – Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Pat Cummins pulled Australia back into contention before declaring 22 runs behind. There was plenty of desperation for a wicket in the final few overs of the day’s play and finally they managed to get Chanderpaul caught behind from the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.

It was a huge day of action and we’re expecting the same today. There’s reportedly some rain coming in Brisbane later tonight and tomorrow, so both teams will be keen to keep things moving. Play gets underway very soon, so let’s get into it!

important events
West Indies 51-1 (Brathwaite 11, McKenzie 28) Hazlewood leaves the field for a moment, and Borland takes the field. Pat Cummins bowled the first over of the day and started with a short ball, but McKenzie ducked under. These batsmen seem to find a lot of space down the ground, but once again Labuschagne is there to cut it off before it reaches the boundary. But McKenzie didn't give up and with four more drives he brought West Indies to 50 runs and there was no stopping him.
West Indies 45-1 (Brathwaite 11, McKenzie 22) Just when it looked like McKenzie would go for another straight four-man drive, Labuschagne saved the day with some great fielding on the boundary to prevent a run. This could be the stimulus Australia needs. His only three were tight overs from Hazlewood.
West Indies 42-1 (Brathwaite 11, McKenzie 19) Brathwaite picks up Starc with a powerful four-for-four straight drive to start a fresh start. McKenzie got into action shortly after with a straight drive of his own, past Stark for a four-point goal. Stark replied with a very big smile that Mackenzie would have to work hard to dig it out.
West Indies 32-1 (Brathwaite 6, McKenzie 14) Hazlewood resumes and West Indies take a 50-run lead. McKenzie had a lead, but luckily for him he fell into the gap and was able to escape to a four-point lead. It's disappointing for Hazlewood, but it's still great bowling.
West Indies 27-1 (Brathwaite 5, McKenzie 10) Stark resumes and gets off to a very deft start. He hit his front foot for a no-ball late in the over and finished with a single soon after. Phil Withall emailed important weather information from Brisbane.
Meghan in the afternoon,
I feel sorry for the poor lawnies who were bowling at the Gabba today. I just finished a 9 hour shift in a kitchen with a broken air conditioner. The humidity here is painful and I feel like I'm being slowly poached…
Bowler rotation will be paramount for Australia in this session.
cheers
fill
Phil, I'm thinking of you, and as unpleasant as that sounds, I'm glad your shift is over! Let's hope Australia's bowlers can pull through. This is definitely one of the benefits of having a fast bowling captain. He knows what a struggle it is and will keep the bowlers in rotation.
West Indies 25-1 (Brathwaite 4, McKenzie 10) Hazlewood played their first full over of the day and Brathwaite returned to strike. He didn't quite hit the starting line and there was a quick single from Brathwaite and a two from McKenzie, with Hazlewood fighting back with trademark accuracy and finishing with three points. The last ball came very close to the stumps after being left to McKenzie.
West Indies 22-1 (Brathwaite 3, McKenzie 8) Starc starts off with a very nice yorker, but McKenzie manages to get his bat under it and sends the ball flying into the boundary for four off the mark. McKenzie is careful, calm after the first boundary, tries to read Starc's bowling and blocks away while he gets a major. Finally he was ready to move on and completed the over in four more innings.
West Indies 14-1 (Brathwaite 3, McKenzie 0) In the first over of the day, Hazlewood pick up where they left off last night. It's always a little weird to start the day halfway through the end, giving it a bit of a Jumanji feel. It feels like Hazlewood is stuck in the jungle all night waiting for everyone to start playing again. Hazlewood's typically tight and accurate overs with a leg-bye for his three balls at the end.
There's only a little time left until the third day's game begins. The current temperature in Brisbane is 34.1 degrees, but the felt temperature has risen to 38.9 degrees, so the stifling heat is expected to affect the development of today's match. Even after sunset last night, I had a lot of pretty wet shirts, so I can only imagine how they would cope with the heat in the Brisbane afternoon sun (incidentally, this is his first draft of Cuba's April Sun) was). The players are at the ropes, with Captain Pat providing inspiration. So let's get started!
As we all know, too much cricket is never enough. The Australian women's team began their home series against South Africa with a T20 win at Canberra's Manuka Oval earlier today. Captain Alyssa Healy overcame illness to play a key role with the bat, scoring 46 runs off 28 balls. Beth Mooney was Australia's top scorer with 72 points out of 57. Darcy Brown and Ellyse Perry with the ball took two wickets each, with Georgia Wareham chipping in one wicket. Australia won by eight wickets with five balls remaining. Please see the match report for details.
Did you miss yesterday's important action day? Don't worry. We support you. Here's the over-by-over action that happened to Martin Pegan and James Wallace. Or, if you're looking for an easier primer, here's a match report.

Hello everyone. Welcome to his third day of this interesting Test match. My name is Megan. I will guide you through the first half of today. My wonderful colleague Rob Smith will pick me up later in the day and see me all the way to the stumps.
This test has been a fascinating match so far. Australia's bowlers looked dominant in the early stages, but then West Indies counterattacked starting with Kabem Hodge, with Joshua da Silva and Kevin Sinclair making a solid first-innings total of 311. When Australia finally beat them, they started losing all their wickets and for a while 311 looked like an insurmountable rather than a decent total. But here too there were some heroes who saved the innings. Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Pat Cummins pulled Australia back into contention, then trailing by 22 points. The last few overs of the day's play were a desperate hunt for wickets, but they eventually managed to get Chanderpaul behind from the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.
Today is a day of massive activity and we expect more of the same today. With rain reportedly expected in Brisbane later tonight and into tomorrow, both teams will be hoping to get things going. Play will begin soon, so let's get started!
