International Soccer Teams Choose California for World Cup Base Camp
This summer, three international soccer teams have picked California as their training ground for the FIFA World Cup. Austria, Switzerland, and Qatar will all set up camp in the Golden State ahead of the tournament scheduled for June, with matches taking place in venues across the West Coast.
Interestingly, their hotel selections show a distinct range in budget. Austria has opted for the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Baccarat, where rooms can soar to $4,000 a night. Meanwhile, Qatar has chosen a much more economical option: the Courtyard Marriott, priced at around $400 per night. Switzerland finds itself in between, settling on The Fairmont Grand Del Mar near San Diego, with standard suites costing about $900 each day.
Austrian head coach Ralf Rangnick expressed his excitement over their choice of venue, viewing it as a “top choice” that could potentially benefit their performance in the tournament. He remarked, “Santa Barbara was my absolute first choice because of its top-notch training facilities and perfect environment for the team.” He added how confident he feels that the players will be comfortable and thoroughly prepared for the competition.
Players like Real Madrid’s David Alaba will enjoy their stay at the Ritz-Carlton Baccarat, which includes amenities such as turndown service, ocean views, fireplaces, and complimentary cocktails. The hotel boasts a renowned pool area, complete with cabanas and chaise lounges, along with a day spa favored for its facials and massages. One of the spa’s offerings, ‘The Golden Hour’ massage, utilizes a shimmering gold body serum for hydration and relaxation, starting at nearly $900.
Practices are scheduled at the University of California, Santa Barbara, just a short drive from their hotel, and one of their games will take place at Levi’s Stadium.
On the other hand, Qatar’s team is keeping things more budget-friendly at the Courtyard Marriott in Goleta, with rates around $371 per night. They’ll have easy access to the beach and enjoy in-room amenities like coffee makers and free Wi-Fi while practicing nearby at Westmont College. The new Spanish coach, Julen Lopetegui, visited the site in January to check out the training facilities and accommodations, emphasizing the Qatar Football Association’s commitment to optimal preparation.
Switzerland has chosen The Fairmont Grand Del Mar as its base, expected to host them for a month-long stay. With average room rates of $900 and suites exceeding $3,000 per night, players will have access to golf at Torrey Pines, the same course famously played by Tiger Woods, as well as a Michelin-starred restaurant and horseback riding along the beach. Coach Murat Yakin mentioned that they were seeking a relaxing environment conducive to training.
Switzerland will kick off its campaign in Santa Clara before moving on to games at SoFi Stadium and BC Place in Vancouver.
