US Can Compete with China in AI Without Compromising Values

Wynton Hall, social media director at Breitbart News and author of Code Red: Left, Right, China, and the Race to Control AI, discussed the situation in a recent segment. He mentioned that the US has demonstrated it can outmaneuver China without adopting a “techno-authoritarian” model of governance.

Hall emphasized the sophistication of China’s ambitions in AI, stating, “Since 2017, they have been aiming for global dominance in AI by 2030.” He pointed out that while the US focuses on less critical matters, China remains intensely committed to harnessing AI’s potential, which he sees as a pathway to political power.

He laid out various challenges facing China in terms of AI, particularly the export restrictions on advanced chips like Nvidia’s H200. Despite recognizing that the competition could be an existential threat, Hall argued that the US must maintain its unique characteristics and values.

“We must defeat China without becoming China,” he asserted. “We don’t want to transform into a surveillance state or experience the horrors of digital confinement. It’s about preserving the freedom that many have fought for, ensuring that our leaders and citizens stay ahead in this crucial race,” he added.

Hall noted his efforts to present the complexities of the issue without oversimplifying, reflecting a broader, nuanced approach. In response to his work, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) recognized him as one of the top 100 influential figures in the AI space, calling his perspective essential in confronting Big Tech while maximizing AI’s benefits ethically. Michael Shellenberger, an award-winning journalist, described the book as “edifying” and a vital conversation starter for those looking to combat Big Tech’s authoritarian tendencies before it’s too late.
