Federal Authorities Arrest Undocumented Workers in New Jersey

On Thursday, federal authorities revealed that 46 undocumented workers were apprehended during a significant operation led by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a cargo facility in Avenel, New Jersey, on Wednesday.

DHS officials stated that this operation involved inspections at licensed container cargo stations, part of an ongoing effort to enforce immigration regulations.

Interestingly, the number of undocumented workers found represented about 22% of the workforce at that particular warehouse.

Currently, all 46 individuals are in federal custody and awaiting immigration proceedings, according to information from DHS.

Background on Recent Operations

Just recently, another large-scale DHS operation occurred at a Hyundai battery plant in Georgia, which President Biden had highlighted as a positive development for “new American jobs.”

Surveillance footage from the Avenel operation showed federal agents leading groups of workers to waiting vans, while law enforcement maintained a strong presence to ensure security as the inspections took place.

The agency emphasized that these inspections aim to “protect the integrity of the supply chain and ensure that warehouse operators comply with all applicable security requirements.”

A spokesperson for DHS noted their commitment to maintaining high levels of security and accountability in bonded facilities to safeguard American commerce and the general public.

Notably, officials did not disclose the name of the company operating the facility or whether the employer might face any penalties.

This raid arrives approximately two months after a similar operation at the Hyundai-LG battery plant in Georgia, where 475 individuals, primarily South Koreans, were detained on suspicions of being in the U.S. illegally. This trend seems to reflect a broader crackdown on workplace immigration issues across the country.
