Authorities confirm first positive Hantavirus case in North America linked to cruise ship outbreak

Hantavirus Case Linked to MV Hondius Cruise Ship

A Canadian has been identified as the first person in North America to test positive for hantavirus associated with an outbreak from the MV Hondius cruise ship, authorities revealed.

Health officials in Canada confirmed on Sunday that one of a group of four Canadians returned from the ship with a “presumptive positive” test result. Another traveler from the same group tested negative. The two men, both in their 70s, are currently hospitalized in Victoria.

Details shared indicate that the remaining two Canadians include a man in his 70s from Vancouver Island and a British Columbian in his 50s living abroad. All four individuals are in isolation at this time.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, mentioned that results for the positive case were available on Friday. She reassured the public that health officials had anticipated such situations.

Henry emphasized the differences between hantavirus and other respiratory viruses that have been significant in recent years, stating, “We do not consider hantavirus to have pandemic potential.”

The cruise ship is expected to arrive in Rotterdam, Netherlands, after departing from the Canary Islands. Reports indicate that remaining passengers were evacuated by personnel in full-body protective gear and were slated for flights to over 20 countries for quarantine. So far, there are 11 reported cases, including three fatalities.

One of the deceased was a Dutch man who was on a birdwatching trip in South America with his wife. Meanwhile, Canadian health authorities are working to mitigate risk, asserting that the threat to the general Canadian population from this hantavirus outbreak remains low, as all confirmed cases are linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship.
