CBP Seizes $2.8 Million in Drugs at Southern Border

Recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents made significant drug seizures worth $2.8 million, targeting suspected drug smugglers along the southern border.

During operations on April 7th and 8th at the Otay Mesa port of entry in California, CBP officers found over 430 pounds of cocaine and methamphetamine.

The first arrest involved a 51-year-old man from Mexico driving a Toyota Prius. After a secondary inspection, assisted by a canine unit, officers uncovered 44 packages of cocaine hidden within the car’s doors, back seat, and rear panel. This seizure totaled about 124 pounds and was valued at around $2.4 million.

The following day, a 21-year-old U.S. citizen driving a Nissan Frontier was also sent for additional inspection. Officers, alerted by scanning equipment, found 25 packages of methamphetamine weighing approximately 307 pounds in the truck bed. This haul was valued at $491,200.

Both individuals were arrested and now face federal charges.

These confiscations are part of ongoing efforts by federal authorities to combat drug trafficking along the southern border, where cartels employ increasingly advanced smuggling tactics, including hidden compartments in vehicles. Officials note that both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals are often used to transport these drugs across borders.

“These successive seizures have halted dangerous criminals and prevented deadly substances from reaching our neighborhoods,” stated Rosa Hernandez, the Otay Mesa Port Director. “Using professional expertise and advanced technology, our law enforcement demonstrates their commitment to keeping our borders secure.”

The recent drug busts came in the wake of Tom Homan, previously a border czar under President Trump, commending the administration’s immigration strategies and border enforcement efficacy.

In a statement outside the White House, Homan emphasized the effectiveness of the measures, claiming they have saved countless lives. He remarked, “Human traffickers are going out of business, right? Cartels are going bankrupt because of those secure borders.”
