ICE Arrests Russian National Linked to Al-Qaeda
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a Russian national accused of connections to al-Qaeda. The apprehension took place in Philadelphia on May 23. The 39-year-old suspect, originally from Tajikistan, had previously been a fugitive abroad.
Brian McShane, Director of the Philadelphia Field Office, stated, “We will arrest linked individuals.” The man’s legal troubles began earlier this year when he was detained at the Western Pedestrian Entrance Point in San Isidro in March 2023.
According to ICE agents, he was “indicted as an unacceptable alien under the Immigration and Nationality Act” due to lacking an immigration visa. They mentioned that he was served a notice to appear before an immigration judge and was later paroled to the U.S.
ICE further noted that the individual was allegedly a member of al-Qaeda, stating, “After his arrest, he will be held in ICE custody while waiting for removal from the U.S.”
Bill Melugin, a reporter for Fox News, indicated that Tajikistani authorities had labeled him a fugitive and suspect linked to terrorism just last month.
Melugin also expressed concerns about national security, linking the situation to the Biden Administration’s border policies that have allowed a significant influx of people to cross. It raises questions, perhaps, about the effectiveness of current immigration controls in place.
