Authorities identify NYC shooter and confirm fallen officer as one of the victims

Mass Shooting in Manhattan: Police Identify Suspect

On Monday, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tish announced that the shooter in a tragic incident that left four people dead, including a veteran NYPD officer, was 27-year-old Shane Tamura.

The first 911 call about the shooter came in around 6:28 PM from a 44-story building on 52nd Street in Manhattan. Tish mentioned at a press conference that surveillance images captured a double-carved black BMW parked on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets, which was linked to the suspect.

According to the footage, Tamura was seen walking alone toward the building’s entrance before he opened fire on officers in the lobby.

“Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old with a Las Vegas residence, is believed to be the shooter,” Tish stated. The vehicle he used is registered to him in Nevada. Inside, officers discovered a revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, a rifle case, and drugs.

Further examination revealed no explosives in the vehicle. Investigation records indicated that Tamura’s car traveled through Colorado on July 26, passed through Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and entered New York City on the afternoon of the shooting.

Upon entering the building, reports claim Tamura shot a woman who was trying to hide behind a pillar, then continued shooting towards the elevator bank where he also shot a security guard and another male victim. Interestingly, he let the woman escape unharmed as she took the elevator to the 33rd floor, which houses “daily care.” However, he fired again, injuring a fifth person before turning the gun on himself.

Authorities confirmed that four of the five victims died, with one male civilian the only survivor, who was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital. Of those killed, there was one man and two women, all of whom were later transported to Bellevue Hospital.

The identities of the deceased civilians have not yet been made public, pending notification of their families, though the NYPD officer who lost his life was identified as 36-year-old Didalur Islam.

A four-year veteran of the NYPD, Islam was a father of three, with two young boys and a newborn child. Tish expressed her condolences, stating, “He was doing the work we asked him to,” emphasizing his sacrifice and commitment to the community.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the victims, their families, and the brave NYPD officers who lost their brothers today. Our city has experienced unbearable loss,” she added.

Tish also reported that the only survivor was in critical but stable condition, while four other individuals were being treated for minor injuries.

As for a motive, nothing has been confirmed yet. However, officials in Las Vegas indicated that Tamura had a history of mental health issues. Tish highlighted that he possessed a gun permit registered in Nevada.
